Watermelon Seed Fine Motor Activities

Watermelon Seed Fine Motor Activities

Like most kids, my daughter loves watermelon. It's quite possibly her favorite fruit. However, she refuses to eat it if there are any seeds in it. Even those little white seeds that you find in the seedless variety. So needless to say, I've been pretty busy removing seeds from her watermelon on a daily basis. Whenever I find something that I am constantly throwing away, I think to myself, can I find a creative use for this instead of throwing it out? Just like egg cartons or raisin boxes or those little caps from baby food pouches, why not find a creative use for watermelon seeds?

Watermelon seeds are pretty small which make them difficult to pick up, even for adults. That makes them perfect for fine motor practice and to help develop the pincer grasp, which is an important skill for developing writing readiness.

So I made these free printable activities which are great not only for fine motor skills but also for letter recognition, number recognition, number quantity, and one to one correspondence. If you don't have any watermelon seeds on hand, you can use anything that is small and dark colored: beads, raisins, small black pom poms, apple seeds, etc.

1. Tracing the letter W with watermelon Seeds

2. Letter Hunt - Place a watermelon seed on each letter W

2. Number Recognition & Quantity (1-10) - Place the correct amount of watermelon seeds on each watermelon

Summer Playdough Mats

Free Summer themed Playdough Mats

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support.

Now that summer is here (or almost) we've started with the barbecues, the yummy foods like hot dogs, burgers and watermelon, and all the fun outdoor activities which I will write about in more detail soon. But what do we do on rainy days? Take all that summery goodness and make it out of playdough, of course!

Playdough mats are great because it allows your child to use their imagination and be creative, while also helping to develop their fine motor skills and strength in their little hands which will get them ready for pencil and scissor control.

I made 5 summer themed printable playdough mats: Make a BBQ, Create a watermelon, Make hot dogs, Make an ice cream cone, and Create a beach! For more summer playdough fun, check out my Free American Flag Playdough Mat as well!

Occupations & Vehicles Matching Activity

Occupations & Vehicles: Free Matching Activity

Father's Day is coming up and I wanted to make an activity similar to the Mother's Day matching activity I made not too long ago. Except instead of matching mother & baby animals, the child matches the "daddies" in different occupations with the vehicles associated to each occupation. Of course there are women in all of these professions, but I wanted to make this specifically as a fun Father's Day activity.

This is a great language learning exercise to teach the names of different types of vehicles and occupations. You can do it as a cut & paste activity, or for toddlers I recommend that you laminate both sheets, then cut out the vehicles on the second sheet and use Velcro for all the pieces.
